The Cross River Tram concept was originally conceived by Cross River Partnership to create physical and social links between the two sides of the river in central London. The scheme is being implemented alongside Transport for London and the four central London local authorities: Westminster, Camden, Lambeth and Southwark.
This new method of transport will help clean up the traffic pollution and congestion in the capital by providing a quiet and environmentally friendly link through central London. The Tram will be a real alternative to noisy and smelly cars for trips into and around town. This supports the Mayor’s Air Quality Strategy 2002 and the Mayor’s Transport Strategy 2004 whose primary aim is to reduce pollution from traffic. The Tram itself will produce no pollution at the point of operation with the intention for green energy schemes to provide the power and recycling up to a third of its own energy. The Cross River Tram will move into Westminster through the Strand and the Aldwych area where currently the traffic is very intensive and footways busy with pedestrian activity.
The Tram project is the testimony of partnership working between Westminster City Council and Cross River Partnership and the commitment of the two organisations to make Westminster a greener place to live, work and travel.
